Top 10 Things We Love in… Portland, Maine

Top Ten Things We love in…. Portland, Maine

“It’s my first time visiting Maine do you have any suggestion on what we should see and do while along the southern cost of Maine?” These are frequently asked  questions by many of long time and new guests . After reading Kim Foley Mcakinnon article in the AA Northeast travel section I felt I should share this wonderful article. “Top Things We Love in Portland Maine.” Thank you Kim for putting this all in one place for our visitor to have quick access to.

Top Ten Things We Love in….. Portland, Maine

The historic seaside city, founded in 1632 as a center of trade between Canada and Europe, is still a major port, but over the years it’s also become a haven for foodies, brewers, artists and other creative types. Hip Portland somehow manages to exude a small-town vibe, with independent shops, galleries, bars and restaurants galore, as well as a proud identity as New England’s largest seaport and second-largest fishing port. Here’s what we love most.

  1.  See how many lighthouses you can visit there are six within 20 minutes of downtown-including Portland Head Light, one of the first lighthouses commissioned for U.S. by President George Washington.
  2. Stroll along Commercial Street, where boutiques, bars and restaurants vie for your attention, while steps away, the working waterfront bustles with a mix of fisherman, charter boats and yachts.
  3. Learn what it takes to be a lobster fisherman with Lucky Catch Cruises, which will teach you how to trap these local crustaceans out on Casco Bay.
  4. Pop into the Portland Museum of Art to see its vast collection of more than 18,00 artworks, including pieces by Winslow Homer, Andy Warhol and Claude Monet. For those traveling with children be sure to stop in at the Children’s Museum right next door.
  5.    Take a free tour of Allagash Brewing Company, one of the city’s first breweries specializing in Belgian-style ales, and sample beers while learning about the brewing process.
  6. Visit the Wadsworth-Longfellow House & Garden, once home to the world-famous poet, where much of the original furniture, including his writing desk, are well-preserved.
  7. 7.   Wander through the year-round Portland Farmers Market, in operation since 1768, which only sells products from Maine. Pick up some blueberries or local cheese to snack on.
  8. Indulge in the delicious, and addictive, hand-cut Belgian fries at Duckfat. They’re cooked in-yes-duck fat and served with house-made dips like truffle ketchup.
  9.    Kayak around Casco Bay with Portland Paddle on a guided tour, or rent a boat to explore on your own. Special tours, like a sunset outing and moonlight paddle, can be magical.
  10. Listen to live music, and enjoy a tasty local beer, at the Port City Music Hall, which has a wide-ranging calendar of acts, from funk ensembles to Talking Heads tribute band.

IRONMAN announced that the race previously known as Revolution3Triathlon Maine will now be operated as an IRONMAN 70.3 event, the first-ever in Maine. The race will take place in Old Orchard Beach on Sunday, August 27, 2017.

“We are pleased to add the landmark location of Old Orchard Beach to our IRONMAN 70.3 race series and look forward to growing the event in this historic beach community,” said Jeff Edwards, Vice President of Operations for IRONMAN.

Well recognized for its pier, which stretches out nearly 500 feet over the Atlantic Ocean, Old Orchard Beach is a beautiful seven-mile strip of sandy beach that has been a family destination for more than 170 years. Welcoming families and tourists alike, the beach plays host to weekly fireworks and concerts, and offers fishing, whale watch tours, top-notch golf and more.

The IRONMAN 70.3 Maine triathlon begins with a 1.2-mile swim gracing the shores of the iconic beach. The 56-mile bike course starts out flat and fast before taking athletes through a series of rolling hills in the surrounding Maine farmland and countryside. Tall pine trees provide shade over much of the course, as it winds through Saco, Dayton, Lyman, Waterboro, Hollis, and Old Orchard Beach. The 13.1-mile out-and-back run course is flat and provides sweeping views of the Scarborough Marsh and includes a portion over the storied Eastern Trail with a finish line in downtown Old Orchard Beach.

“Our entire team is excited about the opportunity to bring one of the largest sporting events to Old Orchard Beach. This community has it all—a gorgeous beach with an incredible pier, several activities within walking distance of the finish line and expo, and one of the friendliest w England communities you will find,” said Charlie Patten, Owner and Founder of Revolution3Triathlon. “If you love Lobster, Clam Chowder and the beautiful Maine coastline, then this is a race you won’t want to miss!”

My Favorite Place to Live

In the world there are many places to live like Hawaii, the Alps, Yellowstone and Lake Louis in Canada.  I would like to live in all places.  But, the place  I would really want to live is Ocean Park, Maine.  I would want to live there because my grand parents have a Bed and Breakfast there, the beach is less than a block away, and the shuffleboard courts are right down the street.

The BillowHouse is the name of the Bed & Breakfast that my grandparents own in Ocean Park.  If I lived in Ocean Park I could help them in the Winters  by cleaning the rooms.  Another great thing about BillowHouse is that my grandmother makes superb food. The best reason for liking BillowHouse is that they have the nicest rooms, especially the one with the hot tub.

I hate always driving an hour and half to go to the beach. Don’t you? But if you lived in Ocean Park you could be closer than a block away from it.  In Ocean Park you can go tot he beach anytime you want with your parents permission.  The water is a tad chilly but after a long, difficult day it feels great. Also the sand makes an excellent spot to play sports like volleyball and football.

If you like to play shuffleboard Ocean Park is the place to be because it’s only one block away.  If you haven’t played shuffleboard Ocean Park is the place to be because lots of people can teach it to you. I love shuffleboard!!!! In the summer there is a tournament every Thursday and if I could drive I would be up every Thursday..  After playing you can always stop to get something to drink at the Variety Store.

There are many great places to live on Earth it just depends on you personality.  I know I didn’t pick the flashiest place in the world  like some of my friends but it’s one of the places I love most, small, old, Ocean Park.  I Love it because the beach is close, the shuffleboard is right down the street, and my grandparents have a bed and breakfast there. I love Ocean Park!!!

“Home Away From Home”

Reviewed August 25, 2013

Been coming to the Billow House with my Mother and Grandmother for ages,

recently my boyfriend has also been accompanying us. I love everything about it.

When I fantasize about owning my own B&B this is exactly what I picture.

Room Tip: We’ve stayed in the little room facing the sea a lot  but I’ve also
stayed in the motel part and it’s just as lovely.” (JessGuyon)
